  8. INTRODUCTION
  9. ------------
  10. Yakkity Clock is a powerful, easy-to-use "talking clock"
  11. utility for the Microsoft Windows operating environment
  12. (versions 3.1 or above).
  13.  
  14. Yakkity Clock takes advantage of the sound capabilities
  15. introduced in Windows 3.1.  The program provides digitized
  16. voice time updates at the touch of a button, or at regular
  17. intervals set by the user.  You may select either a male or
  18. female voice for Yakkity Clock's updates.
  19.  
  20. A library of "built-in" sound effects are included, any of
  21. which may be substituted for the voice time reminder.
  22.  
  23. Yakkity Clock is an alarm clock, too!  Up to four different
  24. alarms can be set to play bell tone or buzzer sound effects
  25. -- and can even be configured to play stand-alone .WAV
  26. sound files!
  27.  
  28. Note:  Alarm functions and voice selection features are
  29. available only in the registered version.

  31. Yakkity Clock's flexibility makes it the ultimate "custom"
  32. clock utility for the Microsoft Windows environment.

  35. VERSION 1.01 RELEASE NOTES
  36. ------- ---- ------- -----
  37. Yakkity Clock (Version 1.01S) is an interim release that features
  38. improved memory handling and a number of performance enhancements.
  39.  
  40. The improvements implemented in this release make Yakkity Clock
  41. more efficient with system memory and "friendlier" to other
  42. applications that may make demands on your sound system hardware.
  43.  
  44. These improvements are limited to your YAKKITYS.EXE file (with
  45. updated documentation in the YAKKITYS.HLP and YAKKITYS.TXT files).
  46.  
  47. You may safely copy all of the new Yakkity Clock 1.01 files into
  48. your Yakkity Clock directory, overwriting all files from the
  49. previous version.

  52. YAKKITY CLOCK FILES
  53. ------- ----- -----
  54. The YAKKITY CLOCK package consists of eight files:
  55.  
  56. README.TXT
  57.     Introductory program ASCII text file.
  58.  
  59. YAKKITYS.EXE
  60.     The executable program file for this version
  61.     of Yakkity Clock.
  62.  
  63. YAKKITYS.INI
  64.     The initialization file, used for recording the
  65.     program's configuration information.
  66.  
  67. YAKKITYS.HLP
  68.     The Windows Help file, used for providing
  69.     comprehensive run-time help.  A registration form
  70.     is included in the Help file; both it and any other
  71.     Help topic may be easily printed through the
  72.     Windows Help menu bar "File/Print Topic" command.
  73.  
  74. YAKKITYS.TXT
  75.     This file, containing program information, notes,
  76.     and general operating instructions.

  78. YAK01.DLL and YAK02.DLL
  79.     The Yakkity Clock voice libraries, containing
  80.     digitized speech data for the program's voice
  81.     time features.

  83. YAKSNDS.DLL
  84.     The Yakkity Clock sound effects library,
  85.     containing digitized sound effects data for the
  86.     program's interval sound and alarm features.

  89. YAKKITY CLOCK PROGRAM NOTES
  90. ------- ----- ------- -----
  91. Yakkity Clock runs within the Microsoft Windows environment
  92. (versions 3.1 or higher), and requires the following:
  93.  
  94.     * VGA graphics capability.
  95.  
  96.     * A Windows-compatible mouse or other pointing device.
  97.  
  98.     * A Windows-compatible sound card (AdLib, Roland,
  99.     Sound Blaster, etc.) installed...
  100.  
  101.     or...
  102.  
  103.     * The Microsoft Windows 3.1 PC Speaker driver.
  104.  
  105. Yakkity Clock runs in 16-color mode, but will run acceptably
  106. on monochrome or black & white VGA systems.  The program will
  107. run in any Windows 3.1+ operating mode.

  109.  
  110. VIDEO DRIVER NOTES
  111. ----- ------ -----
  112. Generally, we do not recommend that this program be run at
  113. video resolutions higher than "Super VGA" 800x600.
  114.  
  115. Video card manufacturers routinely release updates of their
  116. video drivers, both to maintain compatibility with their
  117. operating environments (as in an upgrade from Windows 3.0 to
  118. 3.1) and to fix any reported problems.
  119.  
  120. If you do decide to run Yakkity Clock at resolutions higher
  121. than 800x600, please make sure you are using the most recent
  122. release of your installed video driver.
  123.  
  124.  
  125. SOUND DRIVER NOTES
  126. ----- ------ -----
  127. Yakkity Clock makes use of the sound functions implemented
  128. in Microsoft Windows version 3.1 or later.  So, obviously,
  129. you must have the correct version of Windows installed and
  130. correctly configured for your system.
  131.  
  132. As stated earlier, you must also have one of the following:
  133.  
  134. 1) A Windows-compatible sound card (AdLib, Roland,
  135. SoundBlaster, etc.) correctly configured via Microsoft
  136. Windows' "Control Panel" utility.
  137.  
  138. 2) Microsoft's proprietary PC speaker driver.   The speaker
  139. driver is a small program that allows music and sound
  140. effects to be played through a standard PC case speaker.
  141. This driver is available from Microsoft, as well as from a
  142. number of on-line information services.  It, too, must be
  143. correctly installed and configured via Windows' "Control
  144. Panel."

  147. YAKKITY CLOCK SETUP
  148. ------- ---- -----
  149. Yakkity Clock requires very little in the way
  150. configuration or setup.  Although it can be run from a
  151. floppy disk, we strongly recommend installation to a
  152. hard disk.

  154.  
  155. INSTALLATION GUIDELINES
  156. ------------ ----------
  157. 1. We recommend making a backup copy of your program
  158.    disk.  Keep the master copy in a safe place and use
  159.    the backup disk for program installation.
  160.  
  161. 2. Copy the program files (YAKKITYS.EXE, all *.DLL files,
  162.    YAKKITYS.INI, and YAKKITYS.HLP) from your master disk to
  163.    an appropriate subdirectory on your hard disk (e.g.,
  164.    C:\YAKKITY).
  165.  
  166.    There are no hidden files or "key" files on the
  167.    program disk, so the file copying process can be
  168.    accomplished with the DOS "COPY" command or, if you
  169.    prefer, through the Windows File Manager File/Copy
  170.    command.
  171.  
  172.    This file, YAKKITYS.TXT, is not required in order to
  173.    run Yakkity Clock.  The program files (YAKKITYS.EXE,
  174.    YAK01.DLL, YAK02.DLL, YAKSNDS.DLL, YAKKITYS.INI, and
  175.    YAKKITYS.HLP), however, are required, and must reside
  176.    in the same directory in order for the program to work
  177.    properly.

  179.    Yakkity Clock can make use of independent .WAV files
  180.    in its alarm feature.  Toward that end, any .WAV files
  181.    you might want to use with Yakkity Clock must be copied
  182.    into the Yakkity Clock directory.
  183.  
  184. 3. You may use the "Windows Setup" utility to setup a
  185.    program item (icon) for Program.  Windows Setup will
  186.    recognize the YAKKITYS.EXE file and assign its icon to
  187.    a program group for you.
  188.

  191.    You may assign a program item icon to Yakkity Clock
  192.    manually, through the File/New commands in Program
  193.    Manager.
  194.  
  195.    Always make sure that the correct path and filename
  196.    (e.g., "C:\YAKKITY\YAKKITYS.EXE") is assigned to the
  197.    YAKKITY CLOCK program item.  The "Browse" control in the
  198.    Program Item dialog box will make it easy to locate and
  199.    assign the correct path and filename.
  200.  
  201. 4. If installed correctly, the program should load from
  202.    the Program Manager screen when the YAKKITY icon is
  203.    double-clicked (or from File Manager when the Yakkity
  204.    Clock listing is selected with "File/Run" or double-
  205.    clicked).

  208. GETTING STARTED
  209. ------- -------
  210. Yakkity Clock's performance is entirely dependent on the
  211. accuracy of your computer's system time setting (also
  212. called "DOS Time").  You can check and/or adjust this
  213. setting from the DOS prompt by using the "TIME" command,
  214. or from within Microsoft Windows via the Control Panel
  215. "Date/Time" utility.
  216.  
  217. Assuming your system time is correctly set, Yakkity Clock
  218. should display the correct current time as soon as it
  219. appears on your screen.
  220.  
  221. A pushbutton control is located below the digital time
  222. display.  This button can be "clicked" with the mouse
  223. pointer to provide a voice time update.
  224.  
  225. Yakkity Clock can be configured to automatically provide
  226. periodic voice time or sound effects updates.  In
  227. addition, up to four independent alarms can be set, and
  228. will sound even if Yakkity Clock is not the active window
  229. or if the program is minimized.
  230.  
  231. All configuration settings are automatically saved by
  232. Yakkity Clock (and written to the YAKKITYS.INI
  233. configuration file).  Until they are changed, these
  234. settings will be placed into effect every time the program
  235. is run.
  236.  
  237. To take advantage of these features requires a familiarity
  238. with the Yakkity Clock menu bar commands, which are listed
  239. and summarized in the following section...

  247.     Exit

  249.     This command closes Yakkity Clock unconditionally.
  250.

  252. Options Commands
  253.  
  254.     Voice Selection Settings
  255.     ----- --------- --------
  256.     In the registered version of Yakkity Clock, this
  257.     command opens the Voice Selection dialog box, in
  258.     which either of two standard voices (male or female)
  259.     may be selected.  Either voice may be test-played
  260.     prior to selection.
  261.  
  262.     Interval Settings
  263.     -------- --------
  264.     This command opens the Interval Settings dialog box,
  265.     in which Yakkity Clock can be configured to provide
  266.     voice time updates at regular intervals ranging from
  267.     once every hour to once every minute (the interval
  268.     feature can be disabled by selecting the radiobutton
  269.     labeled "None/Mute").
  270.  
  271.     Several "built-in" sound effects may be subtituted for
  272.     the voice time reminder.
  273.  
  274.     A checkbox control is also available for enabling a
  275.     "pop to front" option, which configures Yakkity
  276.     Clock to appear in front of any other active program
  277.     windows at its selected interval time.

  280.     Alarm 1 Settings
  281.     ----- - --------
  282.     This command opens the Alarm 1 Settings dialog box,
  283.     in which the first of four Yakkity Clock alarms can
  284.     be set.  A series of radio button controls allow
  285.     choices of the type of sound effect to be played
  286.     -- the alarm can also be configured to play a
  287.     stand-alone .WAV sound file instead of one of the
  288.     default bell or buzzer tones.
  289.  
  290.     Scrolling controls are provided in the "Alarm
  291.     Scheduling" area for setting the alarm time.
  292.  
  293.     A checkbox control is also available for enabling a
  294.     "pop to front" option, which configures Yakkity
  295.     Clock to appear in front of any other active program
  296.     windows at its selected alarm time.
  297.  
  298.     A second checkbox control enables or disables Alarm 1.
  299.  
  300.     Note:  The alarm functions are available only in the
  301.     registered version of Yakkity Clock.

  306.     This command opens the Alarm 2 Settings dialog box.

  308.     same manner as Alarm 1, described previously.

  342.     non-registered shareware version, the dialog will

  346.     in this text file.

  411. Yakkity Clock is shareware, not freeware.

  414. to continue providing quality software for the shareware
  415. marketplace.

  418. product (available in 3.5" or 5.25" disk formats).

  420. The registered version is fully functional, and includes
  421. enhanced sound effects and voice-time libraries, including
  422. a female voice module (featuring... you guessed it -- Kate!)
  423. that supplements the male voice-time library files included
  424. with this version.

  426. Also included with the registered version is a collection
  427. of ready-to-use .WAV sound files, all of which will work
  428. with Yakkity Clock's alarm feature -- which allows you to
  429. configure your alarms to play independent .WAV files.

  432. on upcoming Pegasus Development products (including upgrades
  433. to Yakkity Clock) -- as well as other new titles in our
  434. expanding product line.
